Hair Accessories Journey Through Time
Can you believe that hair accessories date back to prehistoric times? It's mind-boggling, isn't it? Our ancestors used sticks and rocks with clip-like edges to hold their hair in place.
Ancient cultures were all about hair accessories. The Greeks and Romans loved crowns made from plants and flowers. In Africa, shells and beads were the go-to materials. And Native Americans used animal bones and feathers for their headdresses. These accessories often held symbolic meanings and power.
Hair ties and scrunchies have been around for ages! They started out as hair rings made from precious metals like gold and silver. Only the wealthy could afford these luxurious hair accessories. Later on, rubber and elastic fibers made hair ties more affordable and comfortable.
Hair pins have also had a long history. They used to be made from animal bone, ivory, or wood. Some Roman hair pins even doubled as perfume or poison containers! Can you imagine that? Today, hair pins are mostly used to keep hair in place.
During the Victorian era, women couldn't have a single strand of hair loose. Hair pins were a must! Men also wore hair pins back then, especially in France. They used them to hold their wigs in place.
Bobby pins came along in the 1920s. They were great for creating pin curls and finger waves, especially under those tight hats that were popular at the time. Barrettes soon followed, becoming a worldwide trend.
Hair combs have been around since the Stone Age. They were used for both decoration and function. Today, we know them as banana clips.
